Kids Martial Arts Classes in Montreal
Improve your child’s focus, respect, confidence, and social skills… all while they have FUN!
Welcome to the Kids’ Program at Carlson Gracie Montreal!
Give your child the gift of focus, respect, confidence, and social skills through the fun and engaging world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. At Carlson Gracie Montreal, we offer a structured environment where children can channel their energy into positive growth, both physically and mentally.
Prepare Your Child for Success in Life
At Carlson Gracie Montreal, we believe Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is more than just a martial art—it’s a foundation for life skills. Our classes place your child in diverse group dynamics, including a range of ages, where they learn to navigate and adapt through mental modeling and real-time problem-solving. Training with peers of different ages enriches their learning experience, as they gain insights from older students and mentorship opportunities with younger ones. This engagement teaches them resilience, focus, and the value of respect for others, setting them up for success in all areas of life.
Confidence and Self-Regulation
Empower your child with the confidence to stand up against bullying and the tools for self-regulation. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instills a strong sense of self-worth and personal discipline, which are key in handling challenging situations. Through learning and practicing BJJ techniques, children develop not only physical strength but also the mental fortitude to face life’s challenges with courage and calm.
Just Have Fun!
Remember, kids need to be kids! Our programs are designed to ensure that while learning valuable life skills, children are also having a great time. Classes are full of energy, engaging activities, and opportunities for laughter and joy. This fun environment is crucial for their mental and physical health, providing a balanced approach to growth and allowing them to expend energy in a positive, structured setting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will this be effective in real-world situations?
Yes! Our program helps children and teens to develop confidence in their physical abilities, allowing them to ward off attacks and stay cool in tense situations. Jiu jitsu designed for people who might be smaller than their attackers to defend themselves, so it’s an ideal self-defense method for children. It’s our goal to make all our students feel prepared to handle anything that comes their way, and to develop the self-discipline to exercise their skills with proper judgement.
ARE PARENTS ALLOWED TO STAY/WATCH DURING CLASS?
We love getting parents involved – and kids do too! We encourage parents to watch their kids’ martial arts lessons – or even better, to join in some of our martial art classes for adults. This will help you build a strong family bond as you train together and encourage each other to progress in the sport. If you do need some ”me time,” that’s fine too! Simply drop them off and go grab a coffee. They will greet you with a huge smile when you return because they had so much fun!
Additionally, we offer free, seasonal 6-week Parents and Kids jiu jitsu courses for young children ages 4-7. This program introduces the fundamental positions and movements of jiu jitsu through interactive play. It’s a great way to physically bond with your child – and get in a great workout too!
MY CHILD IS ADDICTED TO VIDEO GAMES and screen time. How can jiu jitsu help?
Jiu jitsu is probably the best activity for children who sit a lot, or who have difficulty integrating into organized sports.
Our specialty is getting kids active and learning new skills in ways that are naturally fun. The physicality of grappling is an important tool for self-regulation and stress relief that helps kids blossom in all areas of their lives. Many parents find that once their kids start jiu jitsu classes, they see a happier, healthier, more social child develop right before their eyes. You’ll be glad they started!
Plus… most kids love being real-life ninjas and superheroes even more than they do being onscreen ones!
MY CHILD HAS ADHD. WILL MARTIAL ARTS HELP?
Yes! One of the great things about martial arts classes is that it’s an individual sport done in a group environment. We find all our students improve in their focus, self-regulation, discipline, and social skills. But the best part is…. they don’t even realize that they’re devoting time and energy to developing these skills – they’re just having fun!
The best way to find out for yourself is to book a free trial class and meet our team of instructors who are dedicated to helping your child become the best version of themselves. Book now – you will be glad you did!
I DON'T WANT MY CHILD GETTING INTO FIGHTS. WON'T MARTIAL ARTS MAKE THEM WANT TO FIGHT?
No – in fact, the opposite. Martial arts has its roots in self-defense, but we teach children that violence is not the answer to their problems. At Carlson Gracie Montréal, part of our curriculum is teaching when to use their self-defense training and when NOT to use it.
We find that our students become more confident to stand up to bullies and have more humility, empathy, and kindness to others through their martial arts training.
What SHOUld my child Wear/Bring To their First Class?
If possible, please try to arrive 15 minutes early so that you can meet the staff and instructor, sign a waiver, and become orientated with our space. Typically, people wear sandals (since shoes on the mat are not permitted) and comfortable exercising clothes. If you have a gi of your own, bring it! If not, we have rental gis available as well as gis for purchase. And of course, a water bottle is highly recommended. We have a filtered water station where you can refill as needed.
WILL MARTIAL ARTS BENEFIT MY CHILD?
Absolutely! Regardless of your child’s age, coordination, body awareness, strength and size, they CAN and WILL excel at jiu jitsu with effort and consistency. Training jiu jitsu is an interactive, engaging, and fun activity where your child will improve their balance, reflexes, flexibility, and coordination. In addition to the physical benefits, practicing Brazilian jiu jitsu and its embodiment of traditional martial arts principles will gently endow your child with discipline, resiliency, patience, work ethic – and, most importantly, confidence and self-esteem.
Our kids curriculum rewards for effort and engagement, encouraging kids to be good training parters and share their skills with others.
